OCTOBER 25 "THOMAS JEFFERSON - CONFLICTED SOUL"
Thomas Jefferson was one of the early founders and authors of the declaration of independence, he wrote in it himself, he is most famously remembered for his declaration “all men are created equal”
And I quote:
“we hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness—that to secure these rights, governments are instituted among men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, that whenever any form of government becomes destructive of these ends it is the right of the people to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new government, laying its foundation on such principles, and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their safety and happiness.”
Thomas Jefferson even made attempts at legislating laws against slavery. At the time of the American Revolution, Jefferson was actively involved in legislation that he hoped would result in slavery’s abolition; in 1778, he drafted a Virginia law that prohibited the importation of enslaved Africans.
In 1784, he proposed an ordinance that would ban slavery in the Northwest Territories.
The only problem with that is…That while Thomas Jefferson wrote that “all men are created equal,”
He enslaved more than six-hundred people over the course of his life. While he bemoaned its existence, he also profited directly from the institution of slavery.
I said all that to say….we can be greatly conflicted within, about what we know is right, as opposed to what we actually practice.
