OCTOBER 2 "DUMB AND DUMBER II"

What happens when you strap yourself to a billowy cape and jump off the Eiffel Tower? Exactly what you think will happen – though nobody warned tailor Franz Reichelt, who dreamed of inventing a fashion accessory that would allow users to float safely from great heights.

Everyone tried telling Franz he was loon but undeterred, he planned to demonstrate his “coat parachute” by leaping off the Eiffel Tower in 1912. Four seconds later, the tailor reached a descent velocity of 128ft per second, before splatting to the ground. Luckily for us, Franz’s ludicrous “I-Fell Tower” attempt was captured on video, and would presumably have been a huge viral hit, had YouTube been around 95 years ago.
