DECEMBER 25 "WHAT? BABY JESUS STOLEN!"

  Nothing, it seems, is sacred anymore, including the baby Jesus.

And in the days leading up to the theft, all the fingers on its right hand were broken off, except for the middle finger.

Michel Beauregard, the curator of the large nativity scene ~arrived on Sunday morning only to discover that the figure had been pinched.

"I know there are problems in society, but to steal baby Jesus is a cheap shot," he said

"We put up the creche on Wednesday and the very next morning - it was gone.

The life-size Mary, Joseph, Magi and animals have been vandalized repeatedly since the creche was put up last week.

Joseph has a dent in his right forearm and his left hand is damaged. Mary had a stop sign placed in her hands. The donkey's left ear has been broken off.

Blue spruce trees surrounding the figures have been knocked down, and people have been tramping on the light fixtures that illuminate the biblical scene at night.

Beauregard is mystified why someone would bother to take the child figure out of the creche.

"What can you do with Jesus - put him under your tree at home?" he asked.

"This is plain urban vandalism by people that have no respect for religion," said Rashid Bouazouni, stopping by the nativity scene with his infant daughter in his arms.

Michael said the perpetrators are most probably youths exiting from the many bars nearby

A sign now warns revellers that they are on camera, filmed by a video recorder mounted on a building at the corner.

"This may be seen as a funny prank by the vandals, but it constitutes mischief and theft, which are serious crimes,"

While there is no reward for Jesus's return, ~Michael Beauregard would welcome it, that is the return of Jesus, with no questions asked.

What's more, how do you explain to children that there's no baby in the classic biblical scene?

"I guess you can tell them that he only arrives on Dec. 25,"
