JUNE 2 "FOUNDATION, A GOOD ONE NEEDED"

Six persons were killed and three seriously injured when a three-storey shopping complex caved in on Wednesday. The incident occurred around noon. Police said construction work was in progress on the top floor of the building -- located in the City Centre complex of the New Industrial Township -- when it collapsed. Most of the victims were laborers.Several people are feared to be trapped inside the building. Rescue operations were hampered for a while in the evening by the rain. "We have recovered six dead bodies. Three injured have also been rescued. Rescue operations are on. As of now, we can't say how many people are trapped inside," said Praveen Kumar, Deputy Commissioner, Faridabad. "The upper storey suddenly began crumbling on top of me," said Satya Dev, a laborer from Nalanda in Bihar, who has been working inside. Dev got away unscathed, but others were not so lucky. "Another laborer Sunil who was working right next to me got buried under the debris," he added. Four of the dead have been identified so far. Police are trying to find out who the other two are. "I could not understand what happened. The upper story simply started crumbling down," said Satya Dev, a labourer working at the site of the under-construction three-floored building in Faridabad that collapsed on Wednesday afternoon. Faridabad Police have ordered an inquiry into the collapse of the department store in the bustling industrial township, that left six people dead. The incident occurred when expansion work was in full swing inside a store, eyewitnesses said. Shopkeepers closed their shutters and rushed to safety. Traffic came to a halt and a huge contingent of police force was rushed to the site. Dozens of private cranes and ambulances also reached the spot. A corporator of Municipal Corporation of Faridabad, Pratap Singh Chawla, also blamed the expansion work in the building for the collapse. "The expansion work caused this tragedy," said Chawla, holding MCF officials responsible for allowing violation of construction rules.
