JANUARY 30 "WHY DON'T YOU ASK THE QUESTION?"

In the spring of 1977, Anwar Sadat, Egyptian President was in Washington D.C. meeting with reporters… one reporter in back of room stood up and asked him, “You seem like you are very sincere about peace in the Middle East; why don’t you go to Israel and talk with them…”
He gave the standard political answer – I’d love too, nothing would make me happier; but (you know)… skirting around it and basically dismissed the question, but later, by his own account, stated that that question germinated in his mind for months… and it was from that question – that he made his historic visit to Israel. Speaking before Israel’s government; and where he signed the first peace treaty with Israel here in the U.S.  And where it made Egypt the first Muslim county in the Middle East to recognize Israel as a sovereign country; and therefore their right to exist. To think…all this stemmed from a question that was asked.
